AIDS Awareness Campaign -- Stories from Africa

Communicating with Students: A Forum for Questions and Answers

The AIDS Awareness Campaign hopes to link with a growing number of high school classrooms to create dialogue with students in the United States and elsewhere. Students who are exploring contemporary Africa, American foreign policy or global health issues are encouraged to send their questions to our team. While we are not experts, we will do our best to answer them. On this page you will see a list of the questions that we are asked along with the school that has provided them. Click on the question and you will be taken to the answer provided by whichever member of the team has taken the time to answer it. Sometimes our opinions differ, so we will make it clear who is responding.

1) Is Africa really as poor as the Western media portrays it to be?

2) What is the United States doing about HIV/AIDS in Africa?

3) Since Africa was one of the first regions colonized by the Europeans, what effects still exist today?

4) Are most African countries industrialized?

5) In the cities/villages you have visited, have you noticed a need or desire from the people to rebel?

6) As white travelers in Africa, do you notice any discrimination towards you?
